BGD Epic 2 Paraglider: Elevating Your Flights

The Epic 2 by BGD, an EN B-certified wing, is specifically refined to cater to ambitious intermediate pilots. Following the original BGD Epic, the Epic 2 represents a significant evolution in design and performance, marking a new era in the BGD lineup.

BGD Epic 2 Paraglider Review

Design Evolution and Performance

Over the past five years, BGD has incorporated advancements in design, particularly through the contribution of designer Tom Lolies, who brought CFD visualization technology to the team. The Epic 2, as a result of Alula simulation software, feels more geared towards being a performant cross-country machine.

Material and Structure

The Epic 2 maintains a 'shattered' color scheme with a white undersurface. The top surface material has shifted from Dominico to Porcher Skytex 38, with 40g/m2 for the bottom. The aspect ratio has increased from 5.0 to 5.2, with an intricate internal structure that balances forces in flight, maintaining the wing's weight at 5.1kg for the ML size.

Advanced Technologies

The wing features a shark nose leading edge with nylon rods for shape stability and a single rod per cell, differing from the original's two-piece structure. The Chord Cut Billow is used on the leading edge to reduce wrinkles, and the double-skin lower leading edge from the Cure 2 and Base 2 has been integrated, enhancing leading-edge stability. Mini-ribs are also present at the back.

Risers and Lines

The risers, made from 12mm Kevlar webbing, are color-coded for ease of use, with a classic three-line layout and D-tabs in the center of the wing. The upper and mid-lines are unsheathed Edelrid, while the lower is sheathed. The Epic 2 introduces proper B/C controls, a rarity in this class of wing, allowing for angle-of-attack adjustments.

In-Flight Characteristics

The Epic 2 exhibits well-behaved launching characteristics in various wind conditions, filling easily in lighter winds and rising steadily. It's easy to control once overhead, making it great for working on ground-handling skills. The wing responds linearly to brake inputs, with controlled roll and pitch stability, ensuring a reassuring flight experience.

Thermalling and XC Performance

In thermals, the Epic 2 maintains stability, climbing well even in weak conditions. It's designed to have less pressure in the tips, giving pilots a better sense of the air, and performing efficiently in cross-country flights. Pilots can expect to experience controlled collapses and recoveries, with no significant pitching.

Control and Maneuverability

The B/C controls are effective for directional control and slowing in lift, enhancing the glide experience. The wing is also suited for initial steps into acro, with forgiving stalls and manageable dynamic maneuvers.

Overall Impression

The Epic 2 presents itself as a more focused machine, efficient and refined for cross-country performance, yet accessible to low-airtime pilots and beloved by experienced ones. It offers a balance of safety, handling, and performance, ideal for progressing into thermalling and cross-country flying.
