BGD Base 2: Redefining Intermediate Paragliding

BGD Base 2: Redefining Intermediate Paragliding

The Base 2 is the third version in BGD's high-B range, following the original Base and the Punk. Bruce Goldsmith, the owner and designer of BGD, worked with aeronautical engineer Tom Lolies on this model, using bespoke fluid dynamics modeling software. Test pilots Tyr Goldsmith and Dav Geronimo contributed to its final trimming.

BGD Base 2: First Impressions and Design

The Base 2, similar to BGD's EN C Cure in appearance, has a sleek and colorful design, featuring a new color scheme with multicolored interlocking diamonds and swooshes. The aspect ratio has increased to 5.7 from the Punk’s 5.4, with three additional cells, totaling 57. This design offers more weight shift control and easier flying with reduced roll despite the increase in aspect ratio.

Weight and Material

Weighing 5.4kg for the ML size, the Base 2 feels relatively heavy compared to some semi-light wings. The top surface of the wing uses 38g/m² material, and the bottom 40g/m², providing substantial feel and durability. The wing incorporates the 'double-skin leading edge' for a cleaner, more stable leading edge.

Innovative Features

BGD's Base 2 features sheathed and color-coded lower lines for easier handling, with only the rear main lines unsheathed. The wing uses a B/C-control system with an extra webbing riser for trim, and the riser construction helps the wing stay correctly trimmed. The design includes a shark-nose profile and stiffening rods for reduced sail deformation at high speeds.

In-Flight Experience

On launch, the Base 2 rises slowly and steadily, remaining calm in strong conditions. It offers precise control, efficient turning, and smooth handling. The wing provides a calm and easy flying experience, with the pitch well-controlled, making it suitable for pilots moving up from low or mid-B or those stepping down from higher classes. The handling feels like an extension of the pilot’s hands, providing good air feedback without nervousness.

Gliding Performance

The Base 2 offers a comfortable and undemanding glide. Its B/C-control system enables excellent control, akin to flying high-performance wings, making it suitable for long cross-country flights. The wing provides progressive stability, with less pressure at the tips, enhancing the safety and comfort of the flight.

Conclusion

The Base 2 is a well-rounded wing, combining advanced design, carefully crafted handling, and the latest computer modeling. It is an ideal choice for intermediate pilots seeking a wing that offers good performance, EN-B passive safety, and a relaxed nature. This wing is likely to become a popular choice in online cross-country leagues.
